Ghost Shrimp for sale: Overview

Ghost shrimp, commonly known as American glass shrimp, have long been part of the freshwater aquarium trade in the United States. Due to their affordability and availability, they are frequently marketed as feeder shrimp for larger fish. However, when kept in suitable conditions, they can also be interesting and active additions to freshwater aquariums.

Behavior & Activity

These shrimp are peaceful and energetic, spending much of their time moving around the aquarium in search of food. In tanks without predators, Ghost Shrimp can often be seen picking at algae and organic matter on plants, décor, and the substrate. During feeding periods, they tend to congregate in visible groups, creating an engaging display of movement.

Care & Aquarium Setup

Most ghost shrimp sold in the U.S. are intended as feeders and may experience shorter lifespans due to stressful shipping and holding conditions. However, specimens that adapt successfully—or those that are captive-bred—are relatively simple to maintain. A mature, well-cycled aquarium with stable water parameters can support a healthy population of Ghost Shrimp.

Ghost Shrimp for sale & Tank Safety

Like all freshwater invertebrates, ghost shrimp are extremely sensitive to copper. Even small amounts can be fatal. Many aquarium medications contain copper-based ingredients, so treatments should be avoided in tanks housing shrimp.

Important Identification Notes

It is common for various transparent shrimp species to be sold under the name “Ghost Shrimp.” While they may appear similar, not all clear shrimp are true American Glass Shrimp, and care requirements can vary between species.
